“When I was 42 years old I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (a rheumatoid swelling of the vertebrae, which causes ossification of the spine and painful immobility). I had my own business. Within three months I was in so much pain I had to give up my occupation and went onto disability insurance in order to support my family.

“I was told by my medical doctor that chiropractic could not help my condition and might even worsen it. I lived on pain killers for seven years before I finally was urged by a friend to go in for a consultation with his chiropractor — just to see if he could help me.

“Of course, I was skeptical. But the doctor was so encouraging and positive about his work that Idecided to try a few adjustments. He also did a nutritional evaluation of my diet and recommended that I increase my essential fatty acid (good oil) intake.

“Within about three weeks of regular adjustments I was pain free. I decided to continue with the program. Six months later, my ankylosing spondylitis went into remission (confirmed be my medical doctor).

“It has now been four years and the disease has not returned. I am working full time again. I swim and play basketball and enjoy the active lifestyle that Ihad been deprived of for so long.

“Chiropractic saved my life!”

“My brother suffered a brain injury in September 1993. In October 1994, the doctors told us they could not continue to provide rehabilitation because there was little chance of more progress. He was then discharged from most of his treatments.

“My professional and personal beliefs allowed me to question the doctors’ decision. I am aware of the fact that ‘definite recovery’ is difficult to predict. I am a neurophysiologist by training and did research in physiology and biochemistry of the central nervous system.
“My brother received conventional medical rehabilitation treatments for one year. The improvements to his severe short and medium term memory impairments were too slow to make any difference in his life.

“A doctor whom I trust recommended [a chiropractor] to me. During my brother’s first visit, it was noted that my brother would answer questions but would not originate conversation, his general strength on the left side was weak, and he could not follow a light shone in his eyes from 2.5 feet in a dark room.

“After eight weeks of treatment, the results are amazing! He is less disoriented spatially and temporally, his memory has improved, and his gait and general motor control is much better. He has now begun to interact with the family; I even heard him tell a joke!

“He can follow a light shone in his eyes from over twenty feet. An independent ophthalmological exam confirmed the improvement in his vision. My brother was required to return toColombiato complete the paperwork for his permanent disability status. I spoke with him one month after he left theU.S.and was very happy to listen to a very articulate person who remembered the main issues of the previous month and was able to recount them to me. I am certain the chiropractic treatment was responsible for that.”

CASE STUDY:

The following is a case study showing that spinal injury may cause visual loss in a person and that vision was noted to improve when the spine is manipulated.

A 9-year-old child visited her optometrist complaining of headaches and blurred vision. Upon examination, the optometrist noticed that her visual fields were constricted; she was then referred for ophthalmological assessment. A history of recurrent abdominal pain, headaches and “red eyes” was elicited. She had been disinterested in school work for 12 months and was in a special reading class. Her visual acuities were 6/9, 6/9 unaided, and refraction produced no improvement in vision.

After two chiropractic spinal manipulations the child’s eyes were re-examined. At that consultation, the visual acuity was recorded as: right eye, 6/5; left eye, 6/5-1. By repeated visual field testing using kinetic perimetry, the clinical reviewer confirmed that the visual field had returned to normal.

This case history adds to the evidence that spinal manipulation is effective in treating some visual abnormalities subsequent to head and neck trauma.

It is a little-known fact that between 1920 and 1960, several residential programs for mental health treatment were in existence.

InDavenport,Iowa, two institutions (The Clear View Sanitarium, andForest Park) both used chiropractic in their treatment. Dr. W.H. Quigly, D.C., of Clear View claimed a success rate of 60% versus the 30% success rate of state-run hospitals which did not use chiropractic.

The struggle to make Chiropractic care available to all of this country’s deserving soldiers and veterans continues to achieve some victories. Per the latest round of federal legislation, 11 additional treatment facilities will receive funding to provide services to active-duty military personnel.

Members of the Chiropractic profession have been working hard to lobby Congressional representatives toward making services available to all active duty and veteran service people. The latest victory in this quest came when Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for the Fiscal Year 2009. In it, Congress mandated that the Secretary of Defense must see to it that Chiropractic services are made available at 11 additional treatment facilities.

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) has been strongly behind the continued lobbying effort in Congress where Chiropractic generally finds more support than it does among military leadership. “Despite opposition by Chiropractic competitors and an all-to-often unreceptive bureaucracy within the Department of Defense (DoD) healthcare system, we are making strides to increase the number of active-duty personnel with access to much-needed Chiropractic care.” These were the words of Glenn Manceaux, DC, who is the president of the ACA.

Also involved in the effort to bring more Chiropractic to military personnel are members of the Association of Chiropractic Colleges (ACC). “Given the DoD’s unsympathetic attitude, it is remarkable that any pro-Chiropractic provision survived the legislative process and was included in the final version of the National Defense Authorization Act,” said Carl Cleveland III, DC, president of the ACC. “Some at the DoD would like to limit the Chiropractic program to its current plateau of 49 bases, but Congress continues to support program expansion and for that, we are very grateful.”

Military personnel involved in the current war inIraqstand to be the major beneficiaries of this legislation. Observation of medically evacuated soldiers continues to show that the type of injuries sustained can most effectively be treated by a chiropractor. These include low back injuries and pain which is sustained by some 53 percent of victims. Additional injures include extremity pain that accounts for 23 percent of problems. Herniated disc is also a common diagnosis that involves about 25 percent of all pain disorders. Per a study published in the Journal Anesthesia & Analgesia, “The major cause of attrition in recent wars has not been battle-inflicted injuries but more ordinary conditions such as accidents and musculoskeletal complaints.”

Given all of this information, the battle to bring Chiropractic to all service personnel continues. Another round of actions will need to begin when a new president and a new Congress are seated in January. Deserving personnel who have given much for this country will be the future beneficiaries of a fight for Chiropractic services that will need to go on in Congress and in the DoD for many years to come.

The report of a case history about a child who received Chiropractic help for a chronic constipation problem points out both the immediate and the long range benefits of a successful adjustment program.

A recent issue of the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT) tells the story of an 8-year-old boy who was troubled with bowel movement problems since birth. Before he paid a visit to a chiropractor, his condition was such that he’d only have a bowel movement at 7 to 10 day intervals. In fact, at times this even approached 2 weeks and these movements were reportedly quite painful for the boy.

The boy was by all other indications quite healthy. Medical treatment, in an attempt to solve the problem, had included laxatives, high fluid intake and a high fiber diet. All of these produced no positive or desired effect on his condition.

Chiropractic examination revealed that the boy had a subluxation (a partial dislocation) in the sacral region (lowest portion) of the back. Care began immediately with adjustments given to correct the subluxation. This continued with 2 visits per week for 4 weeks.

The result of just 1 visit to the chiropractor was a dramatic improvement in the boy’s condition. His mother was very pleased to report that the boy had a bowel movement on the first day of his visit and again just 2 days later. She also reported over the course of the 4 weeks of ensuing treatment that the condition continued to improve.

Interesting statistics pointed out by the study show that 3 percent of childhood doctor visits are for constipation issues. The figure rises to nearly 30 percent of all visits to pediatric gastroenterologists. Treatments generally include dietary management, biofeedback and laxatives. Statistically, according to the study, between 30 percent and as high as 50 percent of children do not respond to these treatments and continue to have long-term problems.

The results of Chiropractic treatment with this boy and improvements in his life were immediate, continuing and long term. Follow up 1 month after treatment revealed consistent normal bowel functions. Several months later, another follow up revealed the same positive results. Finally, a phone call to the boy, now 13 years after treatment, reported normal bowel function. In fact, he said that his bowel function was nearly “clock-like” with daily movements.

How’s that for producing life-changing improvements? Short-term Chiropractic intervention brought about very positive, long-term results.

Helping a 10-year-old boy to a new and better life has earned a prestigious award for Florida Chiropractor Dr. Channing Bolick.

The “Miracle Award for Clinical Excellence” is an honor presented annually by the Palmer College of Chiropractic inDavenport,Iowa. Dr. Bolick received the 2006 award for his remarkable work in straightening a major curve in the youth’s spine.

Dr. Bolick began seeing the child in early 2006. The boy had earlier been diagnosed with the learning and social problems connected with autism. A Chiropractic exam that included x-rays of the boy’s back showed that he had a 21-degree lateral scoliosis (curve) in the spine.

Eleven manual Chiropractic adjustments were delivered from February 1st to the 27th. After this series of treatments, x-rays showed no trace of scoliosis.

“Subjectively, the patient reported his chronic back pain was gone,” said Dr. Bolick. “His coordination had improved, his attention span had increased, and he was more able to focus. The boy also reported better muscle balance and a diminished problem with echolalia.” (Echolalia is a condition where an individual feels compelled to immediately repeat back whatever is said to him.)

Dr. Bolick was very honored to receive the award and very pleased with the boy’s progress. “One of the noteworthy aspects to this case was that the boy’s scoliosis, or abnormal lateral spinal curvature, was corrected through Chiropractic adjustments alone,” he said. “No other therapies were used.”

PalmerCollegeis a leading educational institution that has trained many of today’s Chiropractors. “Since the discovery of Chiropractic in 1895, Chiropractors have seen many miracles take place,” said Dr. James Van Wagoner, who presented the award on behalf ofPalmerCollege. “We commend Dr. Bolick for his dedication to his patients and to Chiropractic.”

Dr. Bolick is the Director of The Bolick Clinic and Maitland Physical Therapy of Maitland,Florida

People who have been around the Chiropractic profession for a while sometimes get rather accustomed to seeing astounding results. Still, the success story of Laura Hattier and the life-changes for her following Chiropractic adjustments is one for the books.

When Laura was born, she was completely blind. The doctors told her parents there was no hope that her eyesight would ever develop. Her problem was called congenital nystagmus, a condition where the eye experiences involuntary shaking and causes severe vision loss.

This situation did not stop Laura from working to achieve. As a child her vision did improve somewhat, but she was still unable to play or read like normal children. “When I was a child, I would look in an adult textbook and all I could see were dots,” Laura said. “I thought, ‘Wow, grown-ups are really special to be able to look at dots and get words out of that!’”

By the time Laura turned 16 her vision had improved some more, but she was still legally blind. Doctors continued to tell her there was no hope for her condition. Additionally, she began suffering from severe stomach ulcers.

However, Laura did not let that stop her. She decided to enter a teen beauty pageant, and she won. That event changed her life and opened doors that would have otherwise remained closed. “That was the best things about my teenage years,” she said.

Sometime later, Laura’s life was about to take another amazing turn!

When Laura entered college, she took a part time job in a Chiropractic office inDelmar,Delaware. The doctor, Donald Hattier, suggested that he give her an adjustment and this is when her life turned on a dime. In fact, after her first adjustment, her ulcers disappeared and her vision began to improve. It happened that fast.

As the story continues, Laura went on through school and got to the point where she submitted her official resignation at the Chiropractic office. It was at this time that Dr. Donald asked her out on a date. The happy story continues with the two of them now married and the parents of 4 children.

At age 39, Laura is living the life she never thought possible. Her vision has improved to 20/50 and she is able to take care of her family and run daily errands. “I can pick my kids up from school, I can drive my kids to church and I can go to the grocery store for my family,” she said. “I am truly thankful for that.”

Chiropractic has been a “lifesaver,” according to Al Jardine, a founding member of the world-renowned Beach Boys.

“Chiropractic has just been incredible,” he said during a recent interview with Dynamic Chiropractic magazine.

Jardine said the Beach Boys had a Chiropractor at every show; eventually it was a Chiropractor who became the “team doctor” and travelled with the group as they performed all over the world.

The Beach Boys have performed for more than 40 years, in some form or another. “Chiropractic basically kept our bodies in shape,” he said.

“I think the general public should know more about Chiropractic and take advantage of it, because our medical profession is just treating these problems,” Jardine said. “But by large, most of these ailments are treatable without evasive surgery, medicine or drugs.”

“The whole AMA ‘thing’ is overkill — it’s such a powerful establishment,” he said. “But, Chiropractic is a great alternative for me. It’s a practical application — a lifesaver.”

“…It’s the common-sense practice that Chiropractic uses — treating the patient instead of just treating the condition,” he said. “That’s exactly the way it should be.”
